Janniro Repeats in Scratch Main Event
By Michael Kirby (Story & Photos)
AUBURN, CALIFORNIA, July 9, 2021

It has taken a few weeks but ten time AMA National Speedway Champion Billy Janniro has found his groove at Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn Ca. Coming off a scratch main event win last week Janniro wasted little time working back to the scratch main this week and out of the same lane one got inside and led the entire race all along putting up with a feisty Louie Mersaroli on his tail. A mishap in lap one between turns three and four brought down Daniel Faria and Will McCloskey causing a restart.

Instant replay for the champ has he got a good gate and again inside in turn one leading the way and sailing across the finish line up on his back wheel. Mersaroli again chased Janniro and was close for the duration but settled for second. Faria was third and McCloskey fourth. The streak continues as every scratch main event win this season has come out of the inside lane one.

Faria was on fire Friday night making both Division I main events and winning the handicap main event. Faria decked in a new racing suit was undefeated in the handicap program. Off the 30 yard line Faria won his heat, semi-final and the main event. Will McCloskey did a great job chasing Faria but fell out on the last lap. Bart Bast and Kyle Cunningham both had a great race in the hunt. Faria was first, Charlie Venegas took advantage of McCloskey’s spill speeding to second place and Bast was third.

Greg Moore also was a repeat winner Friday night in the Division II main event. Moore won the main event last week and in week one. This week Moore was moved back to the 20 yard line but it didn’t seem to faze him as he was undefeated winning his heat race and the main. Rees Todd was second and Fred Cook was third.

In his first ever main event win Marc Denniston stood atop the podium after coming out on top in the Division III main event. Denniston was also undefeated for the evening winning his heat race and the main. Denniston along with his twin brother Sebe Denniston are relatively new to speedway, he was all smiles with his first win.

In a complete reversal from last week the ongoing battle between Alex Martin and Charlie Trana in the Youth 250 division continued. Last week Martin could not catch Trana and was second to Trana in all the Youth 250 races. This week after the Martin team made some adjustments it was Martin that could do no wrong winning all the Youth 250 races including the main event. “I focused a lot more, and tried to figure out how I could improve, also we changed the rear tire we run,” said Martin. Trana was second in the main and Levi Leutz up from Southern California was third.

In another first ever main event win Friday night 10 year old Caden Cavrikas stood on the podium smiles all around in the Youth 150 division. Cavrikas, of Auburn is in his first full season racing speedway in the youth division after spending two years riding in the pee-wee division, won his first main event in the Youth 150 division. Jameson Hutchinson was second and William Hennefer was third.

Friday night brought Round 3 of the Team SOS Team Challenge Series. Two teams with six riders on each team race in two rider team pairs scoring points for finishing order. The score is tallied each week and carries through the series five rounds.

Coming into round three the score between Team SOS and Team CHP was tied at 18-18. Team CHP was able to score eight points behind strong performances of Billy Janniro and Timmy Dion each scoring wins and three points each. Charlie Venegas chipped in a second place finish and two points for Team CHP. Team SOS scored 10 points and took the series lead. Russell Green took a win and brought three points, Louie Mersaroli and Rheten add two points each for second place finishes and Bart Bast, Daniel Faria and Will McCloskey added one each. Final score after three rounds stands at Team CHP 28, Team SOS 26. Next round is July 30 when the team racing action continues.
