Triple Ruml Rout at Perris Old Skool Speedway Races!

Max and Dillon Ruml followed on from their August AMA National Best Pairs title at Perris Raceway by winning all three trophies on offer on Saturday 15th September. Though the brothers were the cream at the top, there were stellar and headline worthy performances throughout the program as the traditional American Speedway format made a welcome SoCal return after two years.

First Division's three titles were Handicap, Scratch and the return of the popular 'Last Man Out Races.' The show began with Handicap racing, three heats of four riders each produced a top two that would transfer to a 6 man Main Event. Heat 1 saw Sam Ramirez and debutante Sebastian Palmese locked in early battle from the 30 yard line. Ramirez broke clear and eventually Max Ruml, from the 50, got past Palmese to claim second. Max was unable to catch Ramirez. Heat two had Blake Borello storm home from 30 yards, ahead of Dillon Ruml from the 50. Both other riders, David Hancock and Hayley Perrault fell. Gage Geist made it three wins from 30, leading home Tim Gomez from 40.

The Main event, staged right after intermission was a classic. Dillon Ruml made a fabulous start from 50 yards, getting into third place coming out of turn two of lap one. Gage Geist from 30 was the early leader and Dillon was soon up to second place with four laps remaining. The younger Ruml held a tight inside and bided his time with perfection, pulling off a superb inside pass for the win. Geist was second and Borello third.

Both Ruml's, Gomez and Palmese were the invited rider for the Return of the Mohicans Last Man Out Challenge. The first one lap dash had Palmese as the eliminated rider with Gomez being the odd man out in second. This left the brothers Ruml in a two lap match race, Max got the gate and though Dillon kept close, his win never looked in doubt.

Scratch Racing was the second half of the Division 1 show. Two riders plus the two fastest third place riders (timed four laps) were transferred to the semi finals. The non qualifiers from the heats went to a later Trophy Dash. Max Ruml won heat one from Gomez. Heat two saw Sam Ramirez trap to a brilliant win over Geist, Borello in third had the fastest time to also secure qualification. Dillon Ruml led from Palmese in heat 3, Hancock slid off, promoting Joey Donaldson to third and into the semi finals with a faster four laps than Perrault.

Semi 1 saw a lightening fast gate from Gage Geist. Max Ruml hunted him down and made the pass but Geist kept Borello and Palmese at bay to make the Main. Dillon Ruml won semi 2 over Ramirez with Gomez in third. After two early falls David Hancock gave a smooth four laps to win the Trophy Dash. Gomez won the B Main with Borello making a pass on Palmese for second.

Max Ruml again trapped his brother to lead and win the Scratch Main. Ramirez made a pass on Geist to get third place.

Division Two had eight riders, two round of heats with round 2 being Olympique earned handicap style. Dave Rust won heat 1 with his Pairs partner Mike Miller winning heat 2. Miller won heat 3 from the 30 with Blake Cronkrite taking heat 4 from the 20. Ron Davis won the LCQ to join the Main as the 5th rider. Cronkrite got the best start to win the Main Event from Miller and Rust with Lawrence McNutt in fourth.

Division Three featured 11 riders, each having a heat from the line and another from the 10 yard line. Heat 1 went to 17 year Dakota VandenBroeder who won by a distance, a feat repeated by Jim Gibson in heat 2. Gibson was again the victor in heat 3 with Kevin Fiore taking heat 4 and later, also the Consi. The Main event saw Tom Bryant get a great start but he was quickly chased by VandenBroeder. Bryant used all of his Perris experience to hold the vital inside line on the turns but eventually the 17 year old NorCal rider made her move on the back straight for a popular win with Gibson completing an impressive debut to secure a late second.

Vintage speedway made a successful track debut with a 6 rider entry. Chris Mistretta took a clean sweep of honors. Slater Lightcap was the only 250cc Junior but he partook in 3 exhibition match races, defeating Division Two riders John Wilder, Mike Miller and Lawrence McNutt. Levi Leutz and Justin Almon each won a 150 Mini Heat before Leutz took the Main. Ryder Schultz won both heats and the Main of the Pee Wee Division. Joe Jones and Tom Summers took another Sidecar Trophy whilst Nick Nefroney was the winner of the popular Hooligan Class.

Perris Raceway's endless year round season continues on October 20th with the Nick Varner Cup, featuring a 4 team contest using the Speedway World Cup format of racing. November 3rd is Hooligan Night with Speedway classes also running. December 8th features the return of the FIM American Final with spots in 2019 World Championship Qualifiers up for grabs. Dates continue with team racing on January 12th, Feb 2 and March 2, the Olympique on March 30th and a race (format TBA) scheduled on April 27th.
