Legends Night
July 31, 2019 - Industry Racing
By Ryan Evans

Legends and Heroes Night - Industry Racing, CA, USA - July 31, 2019

On an evening that honored many of American speedway’s greatest racers, one its greatest racers went unblemished through the evening and it was Billy “The Kid” Janniro who took home the gold on Legends and Heroes Night at Industry Racing.

Janniro and “Mad” Max Ruml both entered the Scratch Main Event without being defeated, therefore, a draw was held to determine who had first choice of starting position. Janniro won the draw and chose gate one. Max Ruml picked gate two, Dillon Ruml selected gate three, which left Aaron Fox with gate four.

Dillon Ruml was first off the starting line and through turns one and two. Max Ruml was running second with Janniro in third at the end of lap one. Janniro charged under Max Ruml as they exited turn two the second time and turned his attention toward the leader. Janniro caught Dillon Ruml and charged up the inside as they took the white flag. They made contact in turn one and Dillon Ruml went toward the fence and was fortunate to get down before hitting the fence. The race continued and Janniro was first to cross the finish line. Max Ruml finished second, Fox was third, and Dillon Ruml was credited with fourth.

Fox kicked off the evening with a win over Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell. Janniro defeated Sebastian “Big Daddy” Palmese in event two. Dillon Ruml was victorious over Russell Green in event three. Max Ruml closed out the first round with a win ahead of Austin Novratil.

Janniro passed Fox for his second win in a row to start round two. Brad Sauer led event 12 before McConnell slipped past him on the second lap for the lead and the win. Novratil and Dillon Ruml battled side-by-side before Dillon Ruml took the lead and his second consecutive win. Max Ruml refused to let a 20-yard tape penalty deter him. He brought the crowd to its feet by racing around the entire field to take the win to end the second round.

Novratil used the outside to pass McConnell and open the final round with his first win. Max Ruml defeated Fox for his third win. Janniro powered around the outside of Green on the second lap to take the lead and his third straight victory. Dillon Ruml closed out the heats by matching the perfect scores of his brother and Janniro.

A runoff was needed to determine the final spot in the semis. It was a match-up from opposite ends of the spectrum with regards to age. The oldest racer in First Division, Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz, just 10 days shy of his 63rd birthday was pitted against 16 year old Palmese. It was the old master teaching the young student a lesson as Schwartz made the start and held the teenager of the entire way.

The Ruml Brothers led from the start of the first semi with Dillon holding the lead over older brother Max. Max chased Dillon for three laps then went to the cushion and found enough traction to pass Dillon on the last time on the back straight. Max took his fourth win with Dillon joining him in the main event. The second semi provided less theatrics as Janniro cruised to victory with Fox following him into the main event.

Novratil was leading the Scratch Consolation when he suffered an engine failure. That left Green and McConnell to battle for the lead but they came together in turn four with McConnell getting the worst of it. He was down for several minutes but was able to gingerly walk off the track with suspected broken ribs. Schwartz thrilled the crowd in the restart by holding off Green all four laps for the victory.

The Second Division Main Event started with a wheel-to-wheel battle between Rudy Laurer and Kevin Fiore. Laurer secured the lead the second time on the back straight. Laurer held the lead for a lap before Sara Cords, making her 500cc debut at Industry Racing, passed Laurer on lap three. The young lady never looked back from there and made her first appearance a success with a victory.

Mark Fillebrown led all four laps en route to victory in the Third Division Main Event. Tyler Moszer was second, Dennis Osmer finished third, and Brent Smith was fourth.

Wilbur Hancock put together four smooth laps and won the Junior 250 Main Event. Slater Lightcap was second, Alex Martin finished third, Andrew Russell was fourth, and Luke Whitcomb was credited with fifth.

Nick Hohlbein won his heat, his semi, and completed his perfect night by winning the Mini 150 Main Event. Newly-crowned National Champion Levi Leutz was second, Owen Williams finished third, and Jose Navarrete was fourth.

Legends and Heroes Night had many speedway racers from the past and present in attendance. They greeted fans and signed autographs near the entrance of the race track. Racers who were in attendance included former World Champion Bruce Penhall, “Wild” Bill Cody, Sonny Nutter, Dubb Ferrell, and Billy Gray.
