38th Orange County Fair Derby
September 18, 2010 - Costa Mesa
By: Ryan Evans

Billy "The Kid" Janniro tuned up for the National Championship by completing a perfect night with a victory in the main event at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

Janniro and "Battling" Buck Blair gated evenly and entered turn one together. Janniro leaned on the Colorado native pretty hard and pushed him wide. Tyson Burmeister capitalized and cutback underneath to take second on the back straight. Burmeister tried to gain ground on his MXRC Racing teammate but the former National Champion wasn't ever seriously threatened. Janniro was first to the checkered flag, Burmeister finished second, "Flyin" Mike Faria was third, Blair finished fourth, and Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz was fifth.

Schwartz kicked off the heats with a win over "Fast" Eddie Castro. Janniro defeated Blair in the second heat. Gino Manzares scored an impressive win over Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell in the third heat. Faria beat Doug "The Destroyer" Nicol to win the final heat of round one.

Round two began with Burmeister beating Michael Raines. Janniro defeated Jimmy "Little Animal" Fishback for his second straight win. Charlie "The Edge" Venegas beat Jason Ramirez in event 10. Blair ended the second round with a win over Faria.

Venegas started the last round by beating Schwartz for his second consecutive victory. Janniro made it three in a row with a win over Castro. Ramirez beat McConnell in event 16. Faria held off Blair and Fishback to win the final heat.

Faria won the first semi with Blair following him into the main event. Janniro continued his unbeaten streak by winning the second semi with Burmeister getting the other main-event transfer. Schwartz won the Last Chance to book the final spot in the main.

Ryan Tovatt put together four smooth laps to win the Support Main Event. Rick "The Rage" Valdez finished second, Eloy Medellin was third, and Justin Hassan finished fourth.

Speedway newcomer Chad Erl was victorious in the Support B Main Event. Paul Thornton finished second, Dillon Osborne was third, and Norman Graham was fourth.

Rocco Scopellite won both heats and the Youth 250cc Main Event. Gabe Price finished second, River McDougall was third, and Nicky Reimer finished fourth.

A hard crash involving "Haulin" Hayley Perrault and Kurtis Hamill forced a restart in the Youth 200cc First Division Main Event. Both riders were unhurt and able to restart. Perrault led the second attempt for two laps before Broc Nicol went around the outside of her for the lead and the win. Perrault was second and Hamill finished third.

Maverick Molloy led all four laps en route to victory in the Youth 200cc Second Division Main Event. Michael Wells was second, Brian Pintar finished third, Gino Scopellite was fourth, and Chase Sanborn finished fifth.

National Champions Joe Jones and Jimmy Olsen held off Gerard Jackson and Dave German to win the Sidecar Main Event. Bryan Motis and Chris Levitt were third and Scott Driggers and Casey Driggers finished fourth.

The next event at Costa Mesa is the 42nd annual United States National Championship. Former champions Janniro, Faria, Schwartz, and Venegas headline a star-studded lineup that includes McConnell, Castro, Fishback, Blair, and Josh Larsen. Northern California's Tommy Hedden and Bryan Yarrow will be invading as well as New York's Adam Mittl. It is Costa Mesa's biggest event of the year and will be its final event before the 2011 season.
