National Champion "Flyin" Mike Faria

Three-time National Champion "Flyin" Mike Faria took home his third Costa Mesa Scratch Main Event victory of the year at the Orange County Fairgrounds Saturday night.

Chris Manchester made the best start from gate five and used the outside to race around the pack and into the lead in turn three. Eddie Castro, , Chris Kerr, and Faria went down behind Manchester and Faria in turn three and brought out the red flag. A complete restart was ordered by the referee. Manchester was away first again and used the same tactics as the first start, but Faria was too close in turn three for Manchester to dive to the pole. Faria secured the lead at the end of the first lap with Manchester in tow. Faria extended his lead with each remaining lap and cruised to the checkered flag. Manchester followed Faria for second, Kerr finished third, Castro was fourth, and McConnell finished fifth.

Brian Starr, in his first Handicap Main, led the eight-rider field into turn one and was chased by Tommy Hedden for two laps before a crash by Bobby Krips in turn three brought out the red flag. The race was restarted with six laps remaining and Hedden resumed his pursuit of the leader. Starr began to drift wide and Hedden finally made him pay on the back straight on lap six. Hedden was chased by Kerr, but held on to the lead over the final lap for his first Southern California main event of the season. Kerr finished second, Castro was third, Manchester finished fourth, and Faria was fifth.

Mark Baldwin launched from gate four and into the lead in the Support Main Event. Baldwin opened up a sizable lead before Rudy Laurer began to chop into his advantage on lap three. Baldwin's wide line made him vulnerable, but he managed to pull his machine down to the inside on the final lap and won his first Costa Mesa main event win of 2005. Laurer finished second, Chris Metoyer was third, Billy Braden finished fourth, and Bryan Buffington was fifth.

Mark Skeels was first into turn one in the Support B Main Event, but his lead lasted half of a lap when he hit the wall on the back straight. The contact forced him back across the track and he nearly clipped several riders. Skeels' misfortune handed the lead to Steve Dziadus, Jr. who made no mistakes en route to his second main event victory at Costa Mesa. Steve Dziadus, Sr. followed his son across the line for second, Robert Glamuzina finished third, Robert Fiesler, Jr. was fourth, Billy Swaim finished fifth, and Skeels was sixth.

Dylan Black used an excellent start to his advantage in winning the Youth Second Division Main ahead of Joey Holt and Chad Hoyt. Jason Ramirez won the Youth First Division Main for the second straight week with Austin Novratil finishing second and Gino Manzares in third.
