Press Release: Costa Mesa Speedway is Back!

The Orange County Fair and Exposition Center Board of Directors have approved a one year contract for International Speedway, Inc to continue it's popular Speedway Motorcycle racing program in 2001.

"Although International Speedway, Inc had sought a 3-year deal to assure the future of Speedway in Southern California , we are very pleased with our new contract and look forward to another successful year in 2001, " said Brad Oxley, promoter of International Speedway, Inc. "Costa Mesa Speedway is the only remaining Speedway racing venue in Southern California and we're glad to be thrilling our valuable race fans for at least another year."

International Speedway, Inc. is a family owned and operated business founded by Harry and Marilyn Oxley and 1937 World Speedway Champion Jack Milne, in 1969.

2001 will mark 33 consecutive years of full throttle racing action on the Orange County Fairgrounds and will consist of approximately 20 events staged between April and October.

"The Fair has enjoyed a long relationship with Speedway and we're' glad to be able to reach an accord for another year," said OCFEC general manager, Becky Bailey-Findley. "Speedway is a unique venue and just one of the many diverse events and experiences the Fair provides for the enjoyment of the Orange County community."

To the competitors, sponsors, and fans of Costa Mesa Speedway the news is all important. Although Costa Mesa Speedway has long enjoyed a loyal fan base, the sport around it has all but disappeared. Promoter Brad Oxley went on to say, "The same problems we face with escalating overhead meant the death of dozens of other excellent Speedway promotions in Southern California. Costa Mesa Speedway is the last stronghold of our sport and it took many difficult changes to keep our events viable. Without the unselfish support of our riders, officials, fans and sponsors, Costa Mesa Speedway would have been lost. International Speedway Inc. plans to re-double it's efforts to make 2001 the best season ever at the famous "bullring oval".
