1996 C.C. Speedway - Quebec Race Results

June 8, 1996 C.C. Speedway - Quebec Race Results

By Kim Gregory

300 tickets were pre-sold for this big event, and the weather was great. The track had run two races already this season and this was the first race to have visiting riders from Ontario. The track was wet and puddled Saturday morning after a heavy rain the night before, but by race time at 7:30, the sun had dried to the point of needing watering. That was all the grooming track needed for the full night of racing. The program was filled with on-the-edge-of-your-seat battles with side by side racing that swapped the lead many times in the four laps.

The most spectacular crash of the night was Sebastian Plourde in heat 15. He had lead from the gate, with Chris Hesmer close behind. On the last lap, Sebastian made his mistake that put him far too wide in turn two and clipped the fence on the back straight and carved a slot into the boards with his foot peg. His end over end tumble only left him with some bruising, but it had looked much worse. Jim Hesmer won the division two, and his nephew, Erin, (Chris Hesmer's 10 year old brother) won the junior speedway on his 250cc Triumph.

I crashed my newly acquired 897 Jawa hard during the practice, bending the forks, and breaking a bone in my right hand. I was unable to get the bike ready until my second race and my injury slowed me to an embarrassing speed the rest of the night. The night still had a highlight for me... After heat 11, a female spectator grabbed and hugged me, thinking I was Guy Fafard, who had just run an incredible battle with Gary Hesmer. (Our leathers look similar under the lights) Wow what a babe!

(more race results will appear for the other races at this track when Ghetan faxes them to me, and I will add some photos to this page later in the week when I get them developed)
