Winter Series - Round 3
November 29, 2003 - Ken Maely's Ranch
By: Trish Wells

Here was another round of great racing at Maely's this past Sunday, November 29, which was held in honor of the Hot Shoe Man himself, Ken Maely. There was a good turn out, despite it being Thanksgiving weekend and the weather was perfect.

Round one of the teams racing had Justin Boyles team ahead by one point over Bobby Krips'. This was an indication that Justin meant business. Engine trouble in the 2nd round caused Bobby to lose points to Boyle again, and these were never regained. Without they're regular captains, Mark Adams' and John DeFries' teams struggled against the hard hitting Krips and Boyle teams, but they also had their fair share of great races and wins.

Justin Boyle's teams took the win for the day with 48 points over Krips (41 points), Adams (32 points) and DeFries (30 points). Krips team still leads the overall teams racing, with Boyles team coming in second.

Justin Boyle also won the 1st division individual points for the day, with Tim Gomez and John Stunkard tying for 2nd, and Mark Robertson 4th.

2nd Division saw Carlos Cardona, the man attributed with introducing Billy Hamill to speedway, back on a speedway bike, after many years of non-riding. It was amazing to see how easy Carlos made it look after so many years. Competition was tough in 2nd division, with Marvin Sonnier taking away 1st place for the day. Cardona came in 2nd with Nate Smelser 3rd.

The talent of our Juniors is improving with each round, and there was some good, clean racing throughout the day. Ricky Wells scored a perfect score, taking 1st place, Krystal Cramer and Jason Ramirez tied for 2nd, and Austin Novratil came in 4th. These Juniors are our future, and all show signs of a bright one.

The highlight of the day for me was the PW50 racing. We had a full field, including speedway legend Billy Hamill's two children, and points leader Nick Schoonover. There was plenty of passing, and some true "race faces" out there. Once again, Nick was the one to beat. Nick won the points round for the day, with Braydan Galvin 2nd, Kurtis Hamill 3rd, Jack Higginson 4th and Margi Hamill 5th. This is a great class for building the confidence of these young children, and they all had a great time.

Congratulations to all the winners of the Ken Maely Memorial round of the Winter Series.

Next round at Maely's is this SUNDAY December 7th, starting at 11am. Please call Bryan Galvin to be included in the program (909)454-5410. The following round will be Sunday December 28th. See ya there.
